Steel Challenge
Outer Limits Pendulum
What is Steel Challenge?
Steel Challenge is a speed shooting discipline consisting of 8 standardized stages. Each stage has 5 steel targets, one of which is a “Stop Plate”. Competitors are required to engage all 5 targets as fast as possible shooting the Stop Plate last. Competitors are allowed 5 “runs” or attempts on each stage (except for Outer Limits which allows only 4 runs) with the worst run being thrown out. Competitors are assessed a 3 second penalty for any misses. The cumulative total time for the “good runs” counts toward the competitors score on that stage. The total times for all 8 stages will result in the competitor’s final score.
Currently, there is a National Steel Challenge Championship and a
World Steel Challenge Championship. Since the Steel Challenge has
been acquired by USPSA, planning is underway for Regional and State
level championships. Many USPSA-affiliated clubs are now beginning
to offer monthly Steel Challenge matches. Steel Challenge is
unique in that it is fun for competitors, as well as spectators, and
there is instant feedback when a target is hit. It is easy to
watch and follow.
There are several divisions in Steel Challenge in which competitors can compete, all of which follow USPSA Divisions. Steel Challenge also recognizes .22 Rimfire (both iron sights and optics). Unlike Practical Shooting, Steel Challenge does not have a power factor so competitors will tend to shoot “minor” or downloaded ammunition. Competitors start each run with their wrists above their shoulders and handgun holstered (unless they are shooting rimfire which requires the competitor to start at the “high-ready”).
Even cowboys can play..
Because there is limited movement required; no power factor; and .22 rimfire is allowed; it is a great sport for someone to start in “Action Pistol Shooting.” Also, Steel Challenge is a great start platform for Juniors who are interested in shooting.
What Will I Need to Try Steel Challenge?
If you are interested in Steel Challenge, you will only need a center-fire handgun or a .22 rimfire. You will need at least 5 magazines or speed loaders for revolvers and a holster for non-rimfire pistols. You will need eye and hearing protection; ammunition and the desire to have a lot of fun.
Where Can I Shoot a Steel Challenge Match?
Currently, there are three Steel Challenge-affiliated clubs in South Carolina:
- Central Carolinas Shooting Club (1st Saturday of Each Month)
